How do you explain HIV to children?

Raphaël Depallens, Swiss AIDS Federation

1. Talk about it simply and honestly
HIV is something you can explain in simple words. You could say: "It's a somewhat special illness that can make the body more fragile, but with medication it goes very well. You can always ask me questions if you want."

2. How can HIV be transmitted?
This can be explained without going into too much detail:
"HIV can pass from one person to another in specific situations."
"When a person takes their medication, they can't transmit it."
Important: don't create fear, but show that it exists.

3. How is HIV NOT transmitted?
"You can't catch HIV by playing, hugging, holding hands, or sharing a glass..."
"You can be close to a person with HIV exactly as with anyone else."
Key message: no fear, no rejection.

4. What happens in the body?
"In your body there's a system that protects you from illnesses."
"HIV tries to tire out this system, but there are very strong medications that help it stay in good shape."
"With these medications, people can live normally, go to work, laugh, play, and be healthy."

5. HIV and AIDS
"HIV is the small virus."
"AIDS is when the body is very tired because it wasn't helped in time."
"Today, thanks to medications, people can avoid becoming very sick."
Small but important message: "People who have HIV are like everyone else: they can be kind, funny, love, work, and have friends. We should treat them with respect and without fear."
